  29.     •    Microsoft Word 4.0 or better to use Word files.

  34.     These files are designed for use by those with a basic (not
  35. advanced) knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets.

  44. Purpose
  45. -----------
  46.  
  47.     Every business needs to have a plan to track its
  48. progress.  There is no business too small, too large, too
  49. complex or too simple to avoid having a business plan. I
  50. found that many business plan programs assume that you are
  51. going to raise money in the public markets.  However, the
  52. vast majority of businesses are started without large
  53. outside investments or fund raising campaigns. This program
  54. is designed for use by any business, large or small, whether
  55. you are raising money or not.
  56.  
  57.      I didn't write this program in an ivory tower some place, but
  58. out of my own business experience. For seven years, I imported
  59. cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest of Germany, so this is
  60. definitely a "cuckoo" program!  I am involved in many other
  61. business ventures.  I'd be lying if I said I made money with all
  62. of them. But I can truthfully say that all were successful, mainly
  63. because I followed a plan and stuck to it.
  64.  
  65.      BUSINESS PLAN MASTER supplies you with complete template
  66. files. I give you professional formats (footnotes, tables
  67. of contents, some simple graphics), some excellent sample
  68. text and several spreadsheet files for you to use. Alone
  69. these could save you many hundreds of hours of work. Because
  70. of the wide diversity of businesses and business ideas, I
  71. have tried to make these files as universal as possible.
  72. Over time, you will likely incorporate your own language
  73. into the text and make modifications to the worksheets.

  81.     If you want to get started right away, just read these few
  82. lines:

  84.      FIRST, take a look at what is here.
  85.  
  86.     Get into your word processing program.
  87.  
  88.     Open the spreadsheets in your spreadsheet program. The
  89. best file to look at first is BPM Proforma Financials,
  90. either Excel 3.0 or MS Works 2.0 version. I highly recommend
  91. that you do your spreadsheet work first. Make sure your
  92. business idea is going to be profitable before trying to
  93. write the textual portion.

  95.     Open the BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file. It is titled
  96. "Business Plan Master" and has one of the following program
  97. types in parentheses (Word), (Works) or (Text). This is the
  98. main BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file which will contain the
  99. verbiage you will use.

  101.     If you are now hopelessly lost, take a look at the
  102. User's Guide. By registering at the *PROFESSIONAL* level, I
  103. send you a printed User's Guide along with other valuable
  104. items.

  110.      The text files are in three formats, TEXT, Word 4.0 and
  111. Works 2.0. The spreadsheet files are in Excel 3.0 and Works
  112. 2.0 formats. Most other spreadsheet programs can import

  118. compare your past performance to your planned future
  119. performance.

  180.      Shareware describes a method of distributing
  181. copyrighted software in which a user is allowed to fully
  182. evaluate the software before purchasing it.  After an
  183. evaluation period, the user is required to register the
  184. product if s/he decides to keep using it.

  186.      Shareware distribution addresses all the legitimate
  187. complaints that users have with commercial software
  188. distribution.

  190.  •    Shareware allows a user to fully evaluate a product, free of
  191.     charge, in his or her home, *before* deciding to buy it.

  193. •    Shareware programs can circulate freely on Bulletin
  194.     Boards, through Shareware disk distributors, or through user
  195.     groups.

  197. •    Because Shareware distribution reduces the need to advertise,
  198.     Shareware is less expensive than commercial software.

  200. •    Shareware authors can often be more responsive to users'
  201.     requests for help or bug fixes than large software companies.

  203. •    Shareware software, needless to say, is never copy-protected.

  206.     In short, Shareware is a user's dream come true. Users
  207. show their appreciation to developers for this extremely
  208. flexible distribution scheme by registering their software.
  209. Without user registrations Shareware software would
  210. gradually disappear.  It is not sufficient to simply let the
  211. "other guy" pay the registration. You are the other guy's
  212. "other guy".

  216.     Shareware is NOT "free" software.  Shareware is not
  217. Public Domain software.  The fee that you may have paid to
  218. receive a Shareware program does not mean that the software
  219. has been paid for. This money was paid to a Shareware disk
  220. vendor, User Group, Bulletin Board Service or retailer to
  221. cover their cost of getting the program to you.  Shareware
  222. software is paid for by registering your copy with the

  230.     BUSINESS PLAN MASTER has been under development 
  231. for over four years.  During that period it has been in constant use
  232. by its author.  BUSINESS PLAN MASTER was originally
  233. developed for the IBM PC.  It was rewritten to run on Apple
  234. Macintosh computers. The development now is done
  235. concurrently, wherever I feel like working on a particular
  236. day.

  240. Version 1.1 - vaporware

  242. Version 1.2 - Released March 1992 - Expanded emphasis on
  243. service businesses, changes in User's Guide to make it
  244. clearer, addition of ASP required text.

  246. Version 2.0 - Released June 1992 - Added support for
  247. MacWrite II. Many cosmetic changes and change of number
  248. format to ease international use. More changes in User's
  249. Guide to help understanding of financial terms and phrases.
  250. Got rid of many extraneous files and added more humor.

  252. Version 2.5 - Released December, 1992. I moved to God's
  253. Country (NW Montana). Took out MacWrite II files, added
  254. Microsoft Works (many requests for that!), added some
  255. more goodies when you register, added a few things here and
  256. there to the text and the spreadsheets. Took out SYLK files,
  257. too. They didn't work as advertised in Microsoft's manual.

  267. PLAN MASTER has changed considerably since its conception,
